Jigmechu

Jigmechu, in the past, was indeed called by the name “Majhathang”, meaning the  “flat land of peacocks”. Jigmechu is a scenic settlement on the banks of Wangchu river in Chhukha located 180 meters above sea level.

The place is located only 49 Kms. away from Gedu. From Thimphu, travel time is less than four hours to reach Jigmechu. The well-paved national highway from Gedu to Lhamoyzingkha and its proximity to Chhukha and Thimphu has made it a favorite winter recreation spot, especially for picnickers.  On the banks of Wanghcu river with cool winter, camping and picnic sites and a pilgrimage visit to Jigmechu Ney are the main selling points for Jigmechu to the visitors.

Jigmechu, the beautiful river that acts as a territorial boundary for Chhukha and Dagana, ends at the lower part of Bayulkuenzang village after getting connected to the river Raidak. The river Raidak divides Bayulkuenzang and Sharphu, where the two villages both have beautiful landscapes, and people live in harmony.

The Bayulkuenzang village is located on the left side of the river, while Sharphu is at the opposite. The suspension bridge of river Raidak at Lamey connects these two villages. The subtropical climate coupled with good weather conditions makes the Jigmechu area, without any doubt, one of the most beautiful natural sites and richest of biodiversity.

The driving distance from Gedu to Jigmechu is 49 KM, Thimphu to Jigmechu is 150 KM, and Lamoizingkha to Jigmechu is around 19 KM. The hot summer and pleasant winter, beautiful landscape scenery, hospitable people living in a traditional house, enjoying the Bhutanese way of life, and conventional farming make the village even more attractive.

You can also experience a unique local drink called Tongba made out of millet or barley and a variety of authentic Bhutanese dishes made out of either millet or barley or buckwheat or maize adequately cooked in a traditional way pot over a conventional oven.

JigmeChhu Campsite & Day Excursion

Presently there are three camps with well-pitched tents and a proper toilet facility around the campsite area. At the Jigmechu campsite, the camper can either carry their tents or rent the tents from the organizers. Even dining is optional. One can either choose to cook independently or ask the Jigmechu Campsite Management group to cater food for you. Do not miss the Jigmechu Fish Curry, and it was the best curry served at the campsite!

The local community caters to the campsite. Therefore, all the revenue generated from the camp goes back to the locals and their families. Although providing camping service is new in the locality, the hosts are always on their toes to give the guests the best camping experiences. The group also comprises local guides.

If the visitor wishes to take a day excursion to the nearest pilgrimage site called Jigmechu Nye, a local expert will guide one to the sacred Nye, which remains untrodden. According to the locals, the unique natural cave was revealed by Terton Drugdra Dorji. It is known as the mediation cave of Guru Rinpoche, Khandro Jetsen Drolma, and other revered saints.

One can also enjoy a walk along the river bank and glimpse exotic wildlife, especially the birds. If you are into stargazing, the night at the campsite best provides you with a view of twinkling stars. One of the local guides is well versed with the names of the stars in the local language. As simple as the name of the famous six sister stars is known as ‘karma Mindu’ etc..

If you’re planning a camping trip, Jigmechu Campsite should be on your travel list. Going off to explore and experience a far-flung region with a place rich with biodiversity and hospitable local people will be a good way to spend a vacation in Chuukha.
